The problem
Habit apps fail quietly. People build a streak, lose motivation, and stop — because nobody notices. Churches see the same failure at scale: they want members growing in spiritual disciplines together, but have no scalable way to support it beyond announcements and goodwill.
Yoked's answer, rooted in the biblical idea of being "yoked together," is to reframe the question. Not "did I pray today?" but "is our group growing together?" Members join small groups, make shared commitments — daily prayer, Scripture reading, gratitude journaling — and encourage each other through them.
That vision needs two products working as one loop: a mobile app where members commit, check in daily, and encourage one another — and an admin dashboard where churches create the environment that makes it all possible. As the sole product designer, I owned both, plus the design system connecting them.
The app — built around community, not KPIs
The mobile app is where members live the product: they join a group, make shared commitments like Time in the Word and Time with Jesus, check in daily, post prayer requests, and celebrate answered prayers together. The design challenge was tonal — most habit trackers are built on personal streaks and competition, but Yoked's whole thesis is that community sustains habits where willpower fails. So I designed around encouragement instead of leaderboards: a group's home leads with its shared identity and collective progress, prayer sits at the center of the experience, and individual activity is framed as participation in something shared rather than a score to defend. Soft cards, generous whitespace, and human photography keep the tone pastoral — an app that feels like belonging to a group, not reporting to one.
The dashboard — built for operators who aren't technical
The admin dashboard is the engine behind the app: pastors and volunteers use it to create organizations, manage groups and members, and import their community's data. Its hardest problems were structural. Onboarding had to serve both brand-new organizations and invited admins whose organization already existed, so I designed one adaptive flow — pre-filled verification for invited admins, "Skip for Now" instead of dead-end disabled buttons — and when Dorian suggested keeping the Pro-only data-connection step visible but locked for Free users, I changed my design, turning onboarding itself into the upgrade argument. The deepest challenge was data ownership: an admin's edit in Yoked could be silently overwritten by the next ChMS sync, so together we introduced per-field ownership states — ChMS Synced and ChMS Detached — and I made that logic feel safe by treating Detached as information, not an error (gray/yellow/orange, never red), with a simple CSV path for organizations without a ChMS.
Outcomes
What shipped is a complete platform, designed end-to-end by one designer: a member app that makes spiritual habits feel like a shared life rather than a personal scoreboard, and an admin dashboard that lets a volunteer set up their entire organization without a manual. A single adaptive onboarding welcomes every kind of church — new or established, with a legacy system or just a spreadsheet — and the ownership model behind ChMS syncing means admins can edit their data without ever wondering if the system will quietly undo it. Underneath both products sits the design system I built and maintained, which is why an app designed for warmth and a dashboard designed for operations still unmistakably feel like the same product.
